In your opinion, what constitutes a lie? If a person asks a question and you decide to leave out details that would directly pertain to that question...is that lying? If you think the answer might hurt the other persons feelings is that a forgiveable lie? Tell me your thoughts related to lies/lying.

well, I guess there is a difference between lying and non disclosure. i.e. on job application forms, employers will often ask "do you have a disability", if they ask, and I answered no, then I'm lying, and if they then interview me and find out that actually I do have a disability, then they could not employ me on the basis that I didn't disclose the information they required. however, if that question does not appear on the application form, and I choose not to tell them until the time of the interview, they can't discriminate against me on the basis of non disclosure because they didn't answer the question, therefore, I was not obliged to tell.

As a matter of interest, a survey over here revealed that 80% of people admitted to having lied on their cv.

As for not telling someone something because you think it might hurt them, well I guess that depends on whether they are likely to find out. After all, does it go along the lines of, what they don't know ... which is all very well, but if they find out later on, then that might hurt more than it would have if you just told them in the first place.

A lie is simply an unrue statement. Anything which is true is not a lie.

Of course a lie is an untrue statement. That being said, if someone you're not close to asks you a question you don't feel like answering, like "Tell me all about your sexual fantasies" or something, you don't have to tell them the truth to be an honest person. We even lie to people we're close to sometimes to avoid a real direct question. I do consider myself an up-front, honest person, and don't lie unless I feel like there's no other way. I don't even tell white lies generally; I just say something positive that's true.

hmmm, true but if a virtual stranger asks about your sexual fantacies you could just tell them to get lost, grin
